Born August 19, 1812 in Ireland, came to America in or about 1835. He worked as gunsmith.
Some years before the Civil War he got the idea of putting rifles in cannons to increase their effectiveness. Having some doubt he wrote to General Scott for his opinion. Scott said that it would not work and McCrum let fall this idea.
A short time after he learned that Hotchkiss got a patent for rifled cannons.
