.52 r.f. breech loading single shot carbin (4,000 in 1862), 22" round barrel with one barrel band, marked:
BF Joslyn's Patent Oct 8 1861 & June 24 1862 (plus serial number).
U.S. Government purchased about 2300 carbines and privates 1300. A so called transition model (model 1862 with features of the model a864) is in the serial number range 2400 to 3600
