Tax list. Annals of Buffalo Valley, Pennsylvania 1755 - 1855 Lancaster county Historical Society lists Hohn W. Eich(h)oltz as gunsmith in Lancaster from 1843-1844. The 1859-60 Lancaster Business Directory listed as owner of retail gun shops John Drepperd, Jr. and Sr., Eicholtz Brothers (active until 1888 and had their store at 31 Queen Street), J. Fordney and H. Gibbs. Maryland State Archives The 1850 census of manufactures (District 4) listed John Eicholtz with $2500 capital investment in a water mill with 1 employee, 2 run of stones, and annual output of 1153 bbl flour ($5865). The 1880 census of manufactures listed Henry Eicholtz with $6000 capital investment in a mill with 2 run of stones and 50 bu/diem maximum capacity, doing 50% custom work. A 10-foot fall on Hunting Creek drove a 12 hp overshot wheel 6 ft broad at 10 rpm. Annual output was down to 600 bbl flour, etc. ($5260). Painesville Telegraph 1883 At a public sale in Urbana, of the personal effects of John Eicholtz, deceased, three barrels of flour were sold which were made and put up 26 yrs. ago by the deceased. I'm pretty sure it was a different Eicholtz, but maybe from the same family. |
