Davis, N.R. & Co. and Davis, N.R. & Sons Nathan Russel Davis, known as N.R. Davis, born on August 18, 1828 in Somerset, Massachusetts, died on August 14, 1907, in Oak Bluffs, Dukes county Massachusetts, was a pioneer of the American firearms industry. He began his career at the age of nineteen at Dean Cotton and Machine Co. in Taunton, Massachusetts where he stayed there for three years. He then moved to George P. Foster & Co. in Taunton, a company that specialized in the manufacture of rifles. Two years later he joined Colt's Pistol Co. in Hartford, Connecticut to further develop his skills. He turned down an offer to set up a branch of Colt in London, England. Instead, he worked for J.R. Brown in Providence, Rhode Island. N.R. Davis began gunsmithing in 1847 and came to Freetown (Assonet) in 1853, where he joined forces with David C. Thresher and founded the company N.R. Davis & Co. Their forge was powered by a water-powered lathe and they had a team of five employees. They made muzzle-loading fire arms that were sold to hardware dealers in New York. In the year 1858 the manufacture of muzzle-loading shotguns was introduced. In 1861, the company began manufacturing parts for the Springfield rifled muskets, particularly musket sights, under a sub-contract with the government. During the Civil War, they were probably the most important manufacturers of these musket sights In 1862 Mr. Thresher retired from the business, and Thomas G. Nichols became an equal partner in the firm. The company developed rapidly during the war and employed around 100 people in day and night shifts. By 1867, he had established himself as the most important or even the only manufacturer of the percussion shotgun. he also further developed other types of shotguns. When Thomas G. Nichols died in 1883, Davis took on his sons William A. and Natnan Winslow. Davis as new partners and founded the company N.R. Davis & Sons. |
