And again: The U.S. Federa Census of 1880 mentions Calvin Cox, age 53, born about 1827 in North Carolina and living in Swift Creek, Pitt, North Carolina. He is married to Emely E. Cox, age 27, whose parents were both born in North Carolina. He is a lawyer. Also named is a daughter from his first marriage to Love Roach, Sarah C. Cox, age 17.

He was married on December 13, 1860 to Lovey May Roach, who died in 1868. They had one child, Sarah C. Cox. Around 1870 he married Emily Evely Smith. Together they had 10 children. One of them was William Edward Cox, 1870-1946)

In 1869 he was Judge of Probate for Pitt County.
